Assignment 1

Coglab Assignment

In this assignment, you will perform some cognitive experiments on yourself and on a friend. The experiments will record your reaction times on different tasks, and analyze your performance.
AFTER you have finished the experiment, please read up on the purpose of the experiment, and report whether you and your friend's results tally with the expectations or not. Later we shall correlate all the results from everyone and discuss these in the class.

To run CogLab you have to login to windows system in CSE Lab, since you don't have login acess on windows system so for now you can use mine id:ndubey. You also need to select CSE.IITK.AC.IN for log on to option.

By default all machine is CSE lab(ground floor) run Fedora so you have to reboot the system and select Windows sp2 from boot menu.

Please mail me(ndubey@) if you have any problem.

Note that the experiments may vary based on viewing angle etc. Please try to sit at a desk with a monitor about the same size as the CSE windows monitors, and view it straight on, from a distance of about 0.5 m. Please start the experiment in a relaxed state. If you are interrupted, please re-do the experiment.

For the selected experiment, please click on "instructions" and read them carefully. Then do a trial run for a minute or so, until you are comfortable with the keys. Then take the full trial. At the end, you will need to save the data in the plaintext and .html formats, with the filename _stroop

Experiments
Tasks to be done by each person:
  1. Stroop task (filename: _stroop)
  2. Mental rotation (filename: _rotation)
Plus at least one of the following Also, you will need to have a volunteer to do the tests. For the volunteer, the Stroop task is not so important, but definitely do the mental rotation, and also the additional experiment you select from below.
NOTE: The software is from Greg Francis and Ian Neath, CogLab on a CD, Wadsworth, 2003. please limit its use for the purposes of this course only.

Due Date
Before class on Wednesday (so do it by 10th night Tuesday!) , please upload the files in the directory   se367/psych-expt/    in your homepage area. We will present the summary analysis.
