Abstract:

Automated personal identification using human biometrics characteristics is increasingly mapped to wide range of applications. There has been increasingly number of efforts to expand the scope of biometrics research while researchers and scientists continue to explore new physiological and behavioural traits for personal identification. These efforts have been motivated by tremendous growth in demand for more stringent performance requirements for forensic, civilian and ultra high security applications. The suitability and preference for the usage of these emerging biometric technologies varies widely. It highly depends on how they are employed, for what purpose, and in what environment. The development of some of these technologies may take decades while some may sooner compliment the popular/existing biometric technologies. These emerging or next generation biometric technologies face immense challenges to improve accuracy, interoperability, protection/security, and convenience while reducing the cost, in order to move from research to deployment stage. In this talk, we will discuss some of these emerging biometric technologies, their limitations, future challenges, promises and the expectations from the biometric community.
