Abstract :
The initial processing of visual data takes place in the visual cortex area 1 (V1). V1 is the gateway to the different connections coming from the retina via an intermediate relay center called the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Neurons in the visual cortex area 1 are characterized by their orientation selectivity and orientation tuning. The origin of these two properties are not yet fully known. In this talk a model is presented for the development of orientation selectivity and orientation tuning of the cortical cells in the visual cortex area 1. Next it has been shown how this system could be used for pattern recognition purposes.
