In memory of my father
Dilip Atre.
I am a big fan of music in its various forms. I have received basic training in the Indian classical music, and I have been told that I can sing pretty well. I also like listening to and singing the Western pop music.
I read humor, biographies, history (of various kinds... political, social, evolutionary), fitness etc... anything that spurs interest.
I like reading the
phdcomic strips, and this one is my favorite:
Grad Student Etiquettes.
Some favorite quotations:
- "An academic career in which a person is forced to produce scientific writings in great amounts creates a danger of intellectual superficiality." - Albert Einstein
- "A question that sometimes drives me hazy; am I or are the others crazy?" - Albert Einstein
- "Unrestrained capitalism produces great disparity of wealth, cycles of boom and depression, and festering levels of unemployment. The system encourages selfishness instead of cooperation, and acquiring wealth rather than serving others. People are educated for careers rather than for a love of work and creativity. And political parties become corrupted by contributions from owners of great capital" - (extracted by Walter Isaacson from Albert Einstein's "Why Socialism?" article in Monthly Review 1949)
- "You have a moral responsibility when you have been given far more than you need, to do wise things with it and give intelligently." - J. K. Rowling
- "Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged people who just kept on working." - Douglas MacArthur
- "An year spent in artificial intelligence is enough to make one believe in God." - Alan J. Perlis
- "An year spent in database query optimization is enough to make one believe that God does play dice!" - Medha Atre
