Gaze Tracking
In the gaze tracking experiment I had taken Hindi paragraph for reading. I want to first give a little background information on my knowledge of Hindi – although I have learnt Hindi till 10th class, but due to lack of practice in the past few years, my reading speed has slowed down (I can talk fluently in Hindi so the communication has not been affected) and I would consider myself an average in reading Hindi.
a) I have back-tracked my gaze on 4 - 5 occasions while reading the passage. Those instances are:
Occasion of Backtrack |
Possible reason |
First instance of "akhkhyaan" | This was a new word for me, so it took backtracking to understand its meaning from the text |
In the middle of line no 4 | Random noise |
backtracked a line to read the word "kabuliwala" again | This was because I had remembered a passage from the book after reading the name |
"Bhagwan ke age kya ruk paya hai" | Might have wanted to contest that point |
third last line | Going back and forth to the line mentioned in part 4 |
end of passage | just a noise after completion of reading |
b) The longer fixations on words that I have identified are
first instance of "akhkhyaan", "kabuliwaala", "maa ne kabhi…..", "aage kahin kuch", "landmark", "nairashya lila", "harivansh"
c) The above mentioned 7 words were the ones which were focused for a longer time during reading the passage. One possible reason is that some of them are very rarely used. Getting the right pronunciations or the "spelling" of the words might be another reason. Some phrases were also fixated for a longer duration, this might be due to the fact that a longer time was taken to comprehend their meaning.
