Golden Jubilee Inter IIT Students Sports Meet

Inter IIT Students Sports Meet 2009, the most awaited event by the students, was inaugurated on 11th December 2009 by, Director, Prof. Sanjay G. Dhande in presence of Faculty Coordinators - Dr. C S Upadhyay and Dr. Kallol Mondal, Student Coordinators - Prateek Gupta and Shilendra Singh Rajput and the contingents of all 15 IITs. This event will be remembered with pride in the history of IITK not only because IITK was hosting the event after a gap of 8 years but also because IITK contingent performed better than ever before and stood 3rd in Men's General Championship Tally for the first time in 45 long years of Inter IIT meets. IITK Girls team continued to perform well and in spite of injuries to important players, stood 2nd in Women's General Championship Tally.

The journey began in October with the Aquatics Meet. IITK outperformed every other IIT to win both the Water Polo and Swimming Trophies in the Men's Category, another first in the history of events for IITK and probably for all IITs. Prateek Gupta (7 Gold + 1 Bronze) and Dhruv Mehta (3 Gold +2 Silver + 3 Bronze) were the highest medal winners. Prateek Gupta also broke the record in 50m Free Style with a timing of 27.40sec and was awarded the title of 'Fastest Swimmer'. The Main Meet started on a positive note, continuing the lead of 20 points from the Aquatics Meet, and IITK reached the Semi Finals in 7 out of 8 games. (Badminton, Basketball, Football, Hockey, TT, Lawn Tennis and Volleyball). IITK Athletics finished 3rd with Praveen Kumar Panna - leading the team by example - bagging 1 Gold and 2 Silver medals was a competitor for the 'Best Athlete'. Hockey and Football teams continued with the good performance for the third consecutive year to reach the finals and finishing second after losing a well played match to Bombay. In Lawn Tennis, our performance was exceptionally well and IITK bagged a well deserved silver medal in the men's category In Badminton (men), after defeating last year’s runner up, IITKgp, in the league, IITK lost a relatively easy tie in the Semis against Delhi and then to Roorkee to finish 4th. Although IITK girl's lived up to the expectations and won Gold – the only trophy that stays back in IITK. IITK faced a similar situation in Volleyball, defeating probably the best team in the competition, IIT Roorkee, in the league and going down from a 2-0 lead to a 2-3 loss to Bombay in the semis - finally finishing fourth. TT and Basketball did not click, finishing fourth in both the games. Chess and Squash were conducted as demo events.
