Data Communications and Networking

Spring 2014

The objective of this course is to introduce students with the concepts of networking including protocols, LAN, WAN, and wireless networks.

Prerequisite: ECGR 2111 and ECGR 2181 with a grade of C or better.

 

List of topics:
  • Overview of Data Communications and Networking. Protocol architecture, TCP/IP.

  • Analog and Digital data transmission, Transmission impairments, Channel capacity.

  • Transmission media.

  • Signal encoding techniques.

  • Synchronous and asynchronous transmission, error detection and correction.

  • Data link control protocol, Flow control and error control.

  • Multiplexing.

  • Spread spectrum techniques.

  • Circuit switching and Packet switching.

Grading:

Grading will be performed on the basis of the following components:

  • Laboratory assignments=20%

  • Mid-term exam=20%

  • Quiz=10%

  • Final examinations=50%

Late assignments will not be accepted for grading
